Family Murdered in Arson Attack Likely Targeted Over Drug Debt, Police Suspect
An innocent family, including two young children, were killed in a petrol bomb attack on their home. Authorities believe the incident is linked to a drug debt owed by an associate of the father, who had no involvement in narcotics.
An innocent family was targeted in a brutal arson attack, resulting in the deaths of parents Philip and Kim English and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine. Two other children, Nadia and Elliot, remain in critical condition at Crumlin Hospital in Dublin.
The blaze erupted at the family's home in Waterford, Ireland, around 5 a.m. Tuesday, when the attacker allegedly threw a petrol bomb at the front door.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a quadruple murder and suspect it is connected to a drug gang over a five-figure debt owed by an associate of Philip English. Investigators believe the family was targeted due to this affiliation, as Mr. English himself had no involvement in drugs. The gang allegedly initiated the attack after Mr. English was unable to raise the owed sum.
This deadly incident follows a pattern of intimidation against the family that has spanned three years. The family's car was set alight more than a week prior to the fatal arson, and an attempted arson attack on their home occurred less than a month before the fatal event. Friends of Kim English reported instances of paint being thrown on the family car and a social media account being created to target them. Mrs. English had reportedly requested the city council assist with relocating the family.
Chief Superintendent Anthony Pettit of the Gardaí confirmed the investigation is treating the deaths as murder. He stated that the house has been declared a crime scene and is undergoing technical examination. The Gardaí are appealing for information from anyone who was in the vicinity of Birch Avenue and Birchwood between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, or who may have dashcam footage from the area.
Neighbors described a harrowing scene, recounting the sound of a loud crash, followed by screams and the sight of people engulfed in flames. One witness described the aftermath as something "no human should have to see" and has since sought counseling.
Callum English was a member of the Johnville Football Club, where he had played for five years. The club issued a statement expressing devastation and offering condolences to the family. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses.
Local priest Father Gerry Chestnutt described the English family as "nice, nice people, lovely people" and "really good parents" to "really good kids." He noted the close-knit nature of the community and the profound sadness following the tragedy.
Waterford Fire Service responded to the alert at 5:13 a.m., with multiple units arriving to find a well-developed fire. Firefighting operations commenced immediately, and casualties were removed from the residence. The fire was eventually extinguished, and the scene was handed over to An Garda Síochána.
