Family Mourns Teen Killed in River Wear Car Plunge

The family of Zara Shaw, a 16-year-old girl who died when a car plunged into the River Wear, has paid tribute to their daughter, describing her as having "a zest for life."

Zara was traveling in a black Audi A3 with two teenage boys, identified as 17-year-old Jackson Duke and 16-year-old Luke Etheridge, when the vehicle entered the River Wear in Sunderland on Tuesday afternoon. All three were subsequently pulled from the water and pronounced dead.

A 17-year-old male, who was able to escape the vehicle and reach safety, was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

In a statement released by police, Zara's family described her as their "beautiful girl" and a cherished member of their family. "Created as a companion for your sister, Olivia, who loves you deeply and unconditionally. You made us proud from day one, you studied and learnt new skills and made life time friends," the statement read. They further recalled her "infectious laugh and smile" and her enjoyment of dance videos.

The family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and kindness from those who have been touched by Zara's life. They also thanked the Police Liaison Officers and all emergency services for their care and professionalism during the "worst time of our lives."

"Rest safe our beautiful girl, Zara. Always Mam, Dad & Olivia," the tribute concluded.
