Family Feud Erupts Over Secret Inheritance of Generations-Old Farm

A family dispute has surfaced in Australia after a mother secretly transferred a 64-hectare East Gippsland farm, held by the family for generations and valued at approximately $1 million, to one of her seven children without informing the others. The eldest daughter, Belinda Jane, 46, discovered the transaction at Christmas 2025, more than a year after it occurred.

Ms. Jane stated that the decision not only involved the loss of a significant asset but also deeply fractured family relationships. She expressed concern that major inheritance decisions were made without proper legal advice or consultation with all beneficiaries.

According to Ms. Jane, her mother had always spoken of preserving her father's farming legacy. However, Ms. Jane questioned why her mother did not inquire if any of her other six children wished to be part of that legacy. She noted that several siblings had previously expressed interest in purchasing land or becoming involved with the farm, but these opportunities were allegedly never seriously considered, with offers sometimes met with prohibitive prices.

"My mother had basically given her whole inheritance to one of my brothers and had not told us, keeping it a secret for 12 months," Ms. Jane told the Daily Mail. When questioned, her mother reportedly cited that "life got in the way" as a reason for the delayed disclosure.

Ms. Jane emphasized that the core of the dispute is not primarily about money but about the lack of secrecy, trust, communication, honesty, and transparency. She believes this has revived old hurts for the six siblings who felt excluded from a significant family decision. The fallout has extended to intergenerational relationships, with some grandchildren reportedly uncomfortable attending gatherings at the property.

Her mother has largely refused to answer direct questions about who she consulted or why she made the decision, according to Ms. Jane. "She has flat-out refused to answer those questions," Ms. Jane said. "She has since attempted to answer some of them, but she doesn't seem to see the real issue, which is that she has neglected all the other kids."

Ms. Jane also raised concerns about her mother's future care, noting that the transfer of the major asset could impact her ability to fund potential aged care needs. When asked about this, her mother responded, "God will provide."

Ms. Jane decided to speak publicly to encourage open family conversations about wills, estate planning, and inheritance before disputes arise. "The only way to educate people is for someone to talk about it," she stated.

This family situation occurs as Australia anticipates the "Great Wealth Transfer," with trillions of dollars in assets expected to pass from older generations to younger ones. The Productivity Commission estimates that Australians over 60 will transfer approximately $3.5 trillion in wealth in the coming decades. In 2018, over $120 billion was transferred through inheritances and gifts, a figure projected to increase significantly as Australia's population ages and asset values continue to rise.
