Family Farmstead Dairy Recalls Raw Milk Cheddar Over E. coli Fears

Family Farmstead Dairy has recalled one lot of its raw milk cheddar cheese due to potential E. coli contamination. The affected product has a best-by date of July 22, 2027, and was distributed to New York and New Jersey.

The recall, announced Thursday and shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, also impacted Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts. The company noted that the cheese might have been distributed to other states through downstream distributors.

The issue was identified after two strains of toxin-producing E. coli were found in samples of the cheddar cheese in Maryland. As of the announcement, no illnesses or allergic reactions related to the recalled cheese had been reported.

Family Farmstead Dairy issued an apology for the inconvenience and stated its commitment to investigating the cause of the contamination and implementing corrective actions to ensure product safety and quality. The company's website indicates it distributes products to various grocers nationwide, including Whole Foods Market and Fresh Direct.

This recall does not affect any other products from Family Farmstead Dairy.

E. coli can cause severe illness, including diarrhea with bloody stools. While most healthy adults recover within a week, some individuals, particularly young children and the elderly, can develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is a serious complication that can lead to severe kidney damage and, in some cases, death.
