The family of individuals involved in a recent tragedy at West Mersea beach has voiced their support for a review of safety measures, including the potential for more life-saving equipment and clearer warning signage. One boy remains in critical condition following the incident that resulted in the deaths of two other family members.
In a statement released on Monday, the father of the affected children expressed devastation over the loss of his "beloved relatives." He extended profound thanks to the local community members who responded, describing their efforts as "extraordinary." He also acknowledged the "exceptional courage, kindness and selflessness" shown by local residents and visitors who assisted his family members struggling in the water.
"Their actions embodied the very best of humanity, and our family will always be grateful for the bravery they showed in our hour of need," the statement read. Gratitude was also extended to emergency services, air ambulance crews, coastguard personnel, and medical staff.
"I strongly agree with the calls from local residents for a review of safety measures at West Mersea beach, including the provision of additional life-saving equipment and clear warning signage," he stated. "While no action now can undo the pain we are suffering, we hope lessons can be learned to help prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future."
Colchester City Council acknowledged the community's commitment to water safety and stated that they will continue to work with partners to review risks and consider lessons learned from the incident.
