Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was mourned on Thursday by a forum representing families of Gaza hostages after he was fatally shot while speaking at an event in Orem, Utah, a killing that prompted a manhunt as the suspected shooter remained at large.

The Hostages and Missing Family Forum, which speaks for relatives of the people still held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, issued a statement saying it was “with deep sorrow” over Kirk’s death and praised his “unwavering solidarity” with Israel and the hostages. The group posted the statement alongside a video of Kirk on its social media accounts.

Kirk, 31, a co-founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative media figure, was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University, local and national law enforcement officials said. Authorities described the incident as a shooting that has sparked an active search for a suspect; investigators have provided limited public details pending further inquiries.

Former hostages who survived captivity in Gaza also issued statements mourning Kirk. Omer Shem Tov, who was freed after more than 500 days in captivity, called Kirk “one of the strongest and bravest voices for Israel” and said he was murdered “just for speaking his truth.” Noa Argamani, who was abducted on Oct. 7, 2023, and later rescued, wrote on Instagram, “May his memory be a blessing.”

The forum noted Kirk’s repeated public support for the families of those taken during the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks and for the roughly 48 hostages it still represents. U.S. and Israeli officials have assessed that some hostages remain alive, though the exact number and conditions have been the subject of ongoing intelligence and diplomatic assessments.

The shooting occurred against the backdrop of volatile, high-stakes diplomacy aimed at securing the release of hostages and ending the broader conflict in Gaza. Negotiations have repeatedly failed to produce major exchanges since an initial phase of an agreement ended in March, with only a small number of releases reported since then, including an American, Edan Alexander, who was freed in May.

A senior Israeli source speaking to Fox News Digital questioned whether recent violence aimed at Hamas leadership would further hinder negotiations, asking rhetorically how talks could continue if leaders meeting to discuss a deal were targeted. The source, granted anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said many Israelis prioritize the return of hostages over strikes on Hamas figures.

Just hours before Kirk was shot, President Donald Trump met at the White House with former hostages and family members of Americans still held in Gaza. The meeting followed an Israeli strike in Doha, Qatar, the previous day that targeted Hamas leadership and drew international condemnation and concern that it could derail mediation efforts.

The strike in Doha killed six people, including one Qatari security official, according to reporting, though Hamas said its top leaders survived. Qatar, a key mediator in talks to end the Gaza war and secure hostage releases, announced it would hold an emergency Arab-Islamic summit to address the attack. Doha’s International Media Office also sought to play down reported friction with the United States, issuing a statement saying bilateral partnership remained strong and that both countries would continue working together on global stability.

President Trump criticized the strikes in public remarks, saying he was “very unhappy” and asserting that U.S. military officials had been informed by Israel but had been given too little time to intervene. He told reporters that the decision had been made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not by him.

U.S. and international diplomats have repeatedly cited Qatar as a central interlocutor for talks with Hamas. The recent strike in Doha, which a senior Israeli source said targeted leaders who were reportedly in Qatar to discuss a proposal from a U.S. envoy, renewed concerns among negotiators about the prospects for a near-term deal.

The killing of a high-profile American political figure has reverberated across multiple constituencies, drawing expressions of grief from international corners and intensifying scrutiny of security at political events. Kirk’s supporters and critics alike have acknowledged his vocal advocacy for Israel and the families of hostages, which the Hostages and Missing Family Forum cited in its tribute.

Investigations into the shooting are ongoing. Law enforcement agencies have urged anyone with information to come forward as they pursue leads in the case. Meanwhile, diplomats and negotiators continue to weigh the impact of recent regional strikes on fragile efforts to secure the release of hostages and to de-escalate the conflict that has persisted since the October 2023 attacks.
