Fact-Checker Finds Outdated Data in White House App

A fact-checking report by CNN's Daniel Dale identified significant issues with the White House's official app, citing outdated economic data presented as current. The app was launched amid a suspension of television network pool coverage due to the White House banning CNN and other outlets.

Dale, a reporter for CNN, found that sections touting the Trump administration's accomplishments featured economic figures that were several months old. Specifically, data on gas prices, inflation rates, and GDP growth were presented based on information from a prior period.

The app's figures for gas prices were reportedly from seven months prior to the report, predating a significant increase in the average price per gallon. Similarly, the inflation rate cited was from seven months earlier, failing to reflect a more recent, higher percentage point. The GDP growth figure was also based on data from three quarters prior to its release, with the most recent available quarter showing a lower growth rate.

Dale noted that the gas price figure was from seven months ago, before the Iran war, and stated they were now more than $1.50 per gallon higher. He also pointed out that the inflation rate was from seven months ago, before the Iran war, with the most recent rate for August being a full percentage point higher. The GDP growth cited was from three quarters ago, and the most recent available quarter showed growth nearly three points lower.

In his assessment, Dale remarked, "In summary, it may possibly be helpful to consume news from news outlets." His network, CNN, has been banned from White House press coverage.
