Racing Bulls Driver Decisions

The 2027 driver lineup for Racing Bulls remains undecided, with Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad, and Red Bull junior driver Nikola Tsolov vying for a limited number of seats. This situation is unique as Helmut Marko, previously in charge of junior team driver selections, is no longer overseeing this decision. The approach under new management is unclear, moving away from the past ruthless strategy where drivers were quickly dropped if they didn't deliver immediate results. An alternative strategy suggests retaining Lawson and Lindblad to provide a benchmark for evaluating newcomers like Tsolov. This approach would involve Tsolov acting as a reserve, gaining simulator and test experience. The final decision rests with shareholders Chalerm Yoovidhya and Mark Mateschitz, under the supervision of Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.

Formula 1's African Ambitions and Controversy

Formula 1 owner Liberty Media has expressed a long-standing desire to establish a race in Africa, with Rwanda emerging as a potential host. This move aims to give F1 a presence on every inhabited continent and tap into a new market. However, the selection of Rwanda has drawn criticism due to its human rights record, with accusations of 'sportswashing' being leveled against the country. The Democratic Republic of Congo has lodged a case at the International Court of Justice, accusing Rwanda of supporting rebel groups and engaging in conflict that has led to millions of deaths. The DRC's Minister of Foreign Affairs has stated that while they support an African Grand Prix, Rwanda is an unsuitable host. The United States has also imposed sanctions on Rwandan military and officials for their involvement in supporting the M23 rebel group in the DRC. An F1 spokesperson stated that the sport has a track record of delivering economic, social, and cultural value to host nations and believes the African Grand Prix can be a positive force for change and unification.
