F1 CEO Addresses Growth, Diversity, and Future Races

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the sport's calendar for the upcoming season remains unchanged, including races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, while acknowledging the existence of contingency plans. "In case something will happen…we have a Plan B to put in place. But the decision today is to keep going," Domenicali stated in a recent interview.

The CEO also addressed the long-discussed possibility of a race in Africa, identifying Rwanda as the only country to have presented a "serious plan." He indicated that a Grand Prix in Africa could materialize significantly earlier than the end of the decade.

Domenicali highlighted the strategic importance of the American market, emphasizing its "huge" growth potential. He noted that when Americans engage with a sport, it becomes an all-encompassing experience, a goal F1 aims to replicate. While he believes an American driver would be beneficial, he stressed that talent and speed are paramount, not just nationality.

Looking towards diversity and inclusion, Domenicali expressed hope for a female Formula 1 driver in his lifetime, noting that physical barriers are no longer an impediment. "It's definitely something that will happen," he asserted.

When questioned about staging races in locations with differing values, Domenicali acknowledged the challenge of pleasing everyone in a "vast" community, but reiterated F1's focus on "connecting people."

Domenicali, whose contract extends through 2029, spoke about his future. While currently focused on his responsibilities, he anticipates re-evaluating his personal time in 2029. "If I would have a dream today, it would be, try to find a better balance for that," he said, referring to the demanding travel schedule and limited personal time inherent in his role.

Beyond the track, F1 is exploring new avenues to engage younger audiences, with initiatives involving Disney and Lego. Domenicali also referenced F1's popular Netflix series and an upcoming movie project starring Brad Pitt as part of a broader strategy to diversify and capture new fans.
