Extremely Venomous Gaboon Viper Reported Loose in Orange County

Authorities in Santa Ana, California, have issued a public safety alert regarding a Gaboon viper, a highly venomous snake native to sub-Saharan Africa, that was reportedly seen in a residential neighborhood. The Santa Ana Police Department posted an advisory on social media, accompanied by a photograph of the snake, after it was spotted near the intersection of Main Street and Edinger Avenue.

The snake is estimated to be between 4 and 5 feet long. While this specimen is not at its full potential size, Gaboon vipers can grow to exceed 7 feet in length, making them the heaviest venomous snakes in Africa. They are also known for having the longest fangs of any snake, measuring up to 1.6 inches.

Authorities acknowledged concerns that the circulating image might be AI-generated and stated they are investigating the report to confirm the snake's presence. The President of the Southern California Herpetology Association and Rescue is assisting law enforcement in the search and identification of the viper. If captured, the snake will be transported to an exotic animal sanctuary.

The Gaboon viper possesses a distinctive geometric pattern of tan, purple, and brown, which aids in camouflage among forest floor debris. The species is generally defensive, hissing when provoked. Its diet consists of rodents and ground-dwelling birds, which it strikes and holds until its venom takes effect.

The Santa Ana Police Department is advising residents not to approach or attempt to handle the snake if spotted. Anyone who sees the viper is urged to contact the police department via their non-emergency line at (714) 834-4211 and report its location.
