Explosion, Fire at Canadian Military Base Kills Multiple People

Multiple people have died and others have been injured following an explosion and significant fire at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. The incident occurred inside the base, prompting a response from emergency services.

Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the fatalities and injuries but did not provide specific numbers or details regarding the cause of the explosion. He stated that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating and described the situation as "very, very active and delicate."

Prime Minister Mark Carney had earlier indicated on social media that a "serious incident creating a major fire" had occurred at CFB Wainwright. He added that authorities were collaborating with the Government of Alberta and local officials. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith characterized the fire as "significant and tragic," affecting numerous military personnel.

Dane Lloyd, a Member of Parliament for Alberta, reported that the explosion and fire resulted in "significant casualties."

The base is located near the town of Wainwright, approximately 112 miles southeast of Edmonton. Earlier on Saturday, the Municipal District of Wainwright noted that the fire had crossed the base's perimeter fence and was spreading due to high winds. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions were engaged in suppression efforts. At the time of the reports, no evacuation order had been issued.

McGuinty indicated that authorities were still working to determine the circumstances of the incident and that further information would be released. Smith extended her gratitude to first responders and those providing care to those affected.

Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre stated he had spoken with Prime Minister Carney and the defense minister to offer support and urged residents in the area to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.
