Explosion at Canadian Military Base Leaves Multiple Dead, Dozens Injured
Defense minister describes situation as 'very, very active and delicate' as investigation into cause is underway.
Multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries have been reported following an explosion at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. The incident occurred during a live-fire training exercise, with initial reports suggesting the blast may have been caused by striking a gas line or well.
Flames spread rapidly from the base toward the nearby town of Wainwright, fueled by windstorms with gusts reaching up to 62 miles per hour. Fire crews from multiple jurisdictions responded to the blaze.
Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the casualties, stating, "I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base." He declined to provide specific figures, noting that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are involved in the investigation and that the situation remains "very, very active and delicate."
Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the "serious incident creating a major fire" at CFB Wainwright and expressed thoughts for those affected. He indicated close coordination with the Government of Alberta and local authorities, stating he and Premier Danielle Smith were in contact, as were their respective ministers and officials.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as "significant and tragic," impacting many military personnel. Dane Lloyd, a Member of Parliament for Alberta, also reported that the explosion and fire had resulted in "significant casualties."
The incident prompted an emergency response protocol at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, as physicians prepared for a high influx of patients. "This number of patients would overwhelm the city of Edmonton, and that is why we are clearing our decks and mobilizing to respond as if it was our own city," said Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the hospital, describing the event as a "one in every 15 to 25-year disaster."
The Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the fire had crossed the base's fence, spreading quickly due to high winds. No evacuation order was in place.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were alerted to the fire in a training area at the base shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday.
Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre offered support and stated he had spoken with the Prime Minister and the defense minister. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced his province was sending assistance to Alberta, though specific resources were not detailed.
Minister McGuinty stated that authorities are still working to determine the cause of the incident and expect to release further information in the coming hours and days. He expressed gratitude to the first responders and those providing assistance during the difficult time.
