Explore DFW's Natural Beauty Ahead of SMU's Homecoming Game

As the college football season progresses, the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area offers comfortable fall temperatures ideal for outdoor activities, including hiking. This makes the region a notable destination for fans traveling to see the 23rd-ranked SMU Mustangs host the Cal Golden Bears.

Cedar Ridge Preserve

Located approximately 15 miles southwest of downtown Dallas, Cedar Ridge Preserve features nearly nine miles of hilly trails with scenic overlooks. Situated nearly 800 feet above sea level, its wooded trails provide a sense of seclusion, despite its proximity to a major metropolitan area. The preserve is noted for offering a taste of Texas Hill Country within the DFW Metroplex.

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

In the suburb of Plano, Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is accessible via the Dallas North Tollway. This location offers both paved and unpaved trails, as well as a dedicated bike path. A central observation tower provides views of the North Texas fall foliage. The preserve includes wooded paths, open prairies, and a creek, offering diverse natural scenery.

Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge

For those exploring the Fort Worth side of the DFW area, the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge is a prominent trail system. The refuge features tree-covered trails and wetlands that connect to the Trinity River and Lake Worth. Visitors can find boardwalks, natural paths, and even observe bison on the property. The area is also known for its barbecue.

Oak Cliff Nature Preserve

Situated southwest of downtown Dallas, the Oak Cliff Nature Preserve is a 121-acre sanctuary characterized by dense vegetation and dirt paths. An interconnected single track spans nearly eight miles, popular with both hikers and mountain bikers. The preserve is also a short drive from the Texas Theater, a site associated with historical events.
