Experts Weigh In on Laundry Frequency Debate Ignited on Social Media

A widespread debate on X, formerly Twitter, concerning the appropriate frequency for washing clothes has prompted consumer advice organization Which? to offer expert guidance.

The discussion gained traction after a user, @missus_wormy, tweeted that the prevalence of "big laundry" practices has led people to believe every item of clothing must be washed after a single wear, arguing "ENOUGH. expand your mind."

This post has been viewed over 1.4 million times, sparking a variety of user responses. Some echoed the sentiment that washing after every wear is unnecessary if clothes are not visibly soiled or odorous, with one user stating, "I can get 3-4 wears out of a shirt, jeans, hoodies, etc. unless I actually sweat in them, spill something on them, or they stink."

Others maintained that clothing worn in public warrants washing after each use, while some noted that climate and personal perspiration levels influence washing habits.

Which? has released a guide outlining recommended washing frequencies for different garments:

  • Underwear, workout gear, and swimwear: Wash after every wear.
  • T-shirts, whites, and dresses: Wash every one to two wears.
  • Bras: Wash every two to three wears.
  • Pyjamas: Wash every three to four wears.
  • Jeans: Wash every six to 10 wears.
  • Sweatshirts: Wash every five to six wears.
  • Skirts: Wash every five to seven wears.
  • Coats: Wash one to two times per season.
  • Hats and gloves: Wash two to three times per season.
  • Towels: Wash weekly.

A spokesperson for Which? emphasized the need to balance hygiene with garment longevity. For individuals with conditions like eczema, more frequent washing might be beneficial to prevent irritation from bacteria. However, excessive washing can lead to premature wear and tear on clothing.

The organization's advice suggests that while some items require frequent laundering for hygiene, others can be worn multiple times before needing a wash, offering a middle ground in the online debate.
