Modern smartphones and their applications offer numerous features that can be used to hide secret conversations, travel, and meetings, according to technology experts and relationship therapists. These tools, often referred to as 'affair mode,' allow for messages to disappear automatically, notifications to be obscured, and locations to be untracked.
Relationship therapists and divorce attorneys have coined the term 'affair mode' to describe the collection of smartphone tools that can be used to conceal infidelity. While many of these features are designed for security or convenience, their combination can create a device that appears ordinary while actively hiding illicit activity.
Tech expert Kim Komando, who specializes in consumer technology, has identified several settings and apps that can be used for this purpose. These methods may vary slightly depending on the phone's model and operating system, but the underlying functionalities are often discoverable within the device's settings.
One common tactic involves disguised calculator apps. Applications like Calculator Pro+, Calculator Vault, and Secret Calculator appear as standard calculator functions but open into hidden photo vaults, private messaging apps, or secret call logs when a PIN is entered. A real calculator app is typically small, under 5MB, whereas disguised apps can consume significantly more storage. Furthermore, legitimate calculator apps do not require access to contacts, microphones, or cameras, unlike many of these hidden apps.
Location tracking is another area where evidence can be found. On iPhones, the 'Significant Locations' feature in Location Services stores a history of places the device has traveled, including timestamps and addresses, accessible through Face ID. For Android users, Google Maps' 'Your Timeline' provides a similar day-by-day map of travel history, which is stored in the cloud and accessible from any device logged into the same Google account.
Vanishing message features are increasingly prevalent. On iPhones, the 'Keep Messages' setting can be configured to delete conversations automatically after a set period, such as 30 days, instead of 'Forever.' While messages can be deleted individually, they may still be recoverable on other synced devices, such as iPads, if message syncing is enabled. WhatsApp offers an even more direct 'disappearing messages' option that can be set to erase chats after 24 hours, seven days, or 90 days. On Android, a 'Vanish Mode' notification at the top of a chat or a dotted circle icon in the chat list can indicate the use of such features.
Some conversations are not deleted but are hidden from view. Android allows users to archive messages, use secure folders, or activate 'silent notifications.' Archived messages can be found in the Google Messages app by tapping the profile icon or the three-dot menu and selecting 'Archived.' On WhatsApp, locked chats are accessible via Face ID or a secret code at the top of the main chat screen. While iMessage itself does not have a specific function to lock individual threads, the app icon can be locked using Face ID or a password.
Apps can also be hidden from the home screen on iPhones. By selecting 'Remove from Home Screen' instead of deleting the app, it remains installed and can send notifications but is no longer visible. Hidden apps can be found in the App Library or by checking iPhone Storage in the settings. On Android, hidden apps might be found in App Drawer settings, under Settings > Apps, or within a 'Private Space' feature. Unexpected app activity can also be identified by checking battery usage reports.
Unlabeled notifications are another method used to conceal activity. On iPhones, setting 'Show Previews' to 'Never' in Notification settings will display only the word 'Notification' instead of message details and sender names. Apple's Focus Modes offer further customization, allowing specific contacts to bypass silencing. For Android users, Notification History in settings logs dismissed alerts, which may reveal 'Sensitive Content Hidden' if privacy settings are configured to do so.
Experts caution that while these tools can be used for deception, they are not exclusively for infidelity. Many people utilize privacy settings for legitimate reasons, such as protecting financial or medical information. However, when suspicions arise and explanations become inconsistent, these digital footprints can provide crucial insights.
