Expert Warns Against High-Dose Weight-Loss Drugs, Citing Potential for Disordered Eating

Functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole has cautioned against the high-dose, long-term use of popular weight-loss drugs like GLP-1s, suggesting that such an approach is not the optimal solution for improving metabolic health. Instead, he advocates for a more balanced strategy that includes micro-dosing peptides in conjunction with lifestyle changes.

Cole noted that a significant majority of U.S. adults, an estimated 93%, are metabolically unhealthy, highlighting a broader issue beyond a simple pharmaceutical deficiency. He expressed concern that suppressing food cravings with high doses of these medications could potentially impact other reward-seeking behaviors, including social relationships, and lead to a fear of hunger.

"Food noise is actually a decent thing in balance, so shutting down your hunger cues with an 'atomic bomb' peptide dose is not the solution," Cole stated. He believes that an overreliance on GLP-1 medications might contribute to disordered eating patterns and an increasing apprehension towards natural hunger signals.

While acknowledging the therapeutic potential of GLP-1s, such as reducing inflammation, managing autoimmune conditions, and improving gut health, Cole emphasized the importance of finding the lowest effective dose when combined with lifestyle interventions. He also expressed greater enthusiasm for other peptides that target inflammation or longevity.

The surge in metabolic problems, Cole suggested, is driven by factors including diets high in ultraprocessed foods, nutrient deficiencies, environmental toxins, stress, and trauma, rather than a lack of medication.

Cole also pointed out that peptides, beyond their use for weight loss, are being explored for their roles in healthy aging, cellular healing, and metabolic health, as they play a role in cellular communication. However, he stressed the need for transparency, product purity, and clear labeling in the growing peptide market to ensure informed decisions by both healthcare professionals and consumers.
