As the summer social season approaches, achieving a healthy, golden glow is a common goal. However, many opt for self-tanning products to avoid the sun's harmful UV rays. To ensure a natural, streak-free finish, industry experts recommend a multi-step approach focusing on preparation, application, and ongoing care.

Preparation is paramount for a professional-looking tan. Nicola Matthews, founder of Sienna X, advises exfoliating the skin 24 to 48 hours before application. This process is particularly important for drier areas such as the hands, elbows, knees, and ankles. Shaving or waxing should also be completed at least a day prior to tanning to prevent uneven color development in freshly opened hair follicles. On the day of application, the skin should be clean, dry, and free from moisturizers, deodorants, perfumes, and body oils, as these can interfere with the tanning product's development.

Aftercare plays an equally crucial role in the longevity and evenness of a self-tan. When rinsing off the product, experts suggest showering until the water runs clear and then gently patting the skin dry, rather than rubbing. Daily moisturizing is also recommended to keep the skin hydrated, which helps the tan fade more evenly and can extend its life by several days. Hydrated skin not only looks healthier but also contributes to a more natural fading process.

When selecting self-tanning products, look for formulas enriched with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, aloe vera, Q10, and squalane. Matthews recommends avoiding products with high alcohol content, especially for those with dry or sensitive skin, as they can be drying. Choosing a tan that complements your natural skin tone is also key for a natural appearance. Georgia Davies, co-founder of Tandae, suggests that individuals with cool or olive undertones use a tan with green undertones to act as a color corrector, while those with very fair skin may benefit from a tan with red undertones to counteract dullness.

Proper tools can significantly enhance the application process. Johanna Bennemann, International Marketing Manager at Tan-Luxe, recommends using tools like a kabuki brush for difficult areas like hands, elbows, knees, and ankles. This helps to buff and blend the product, creating a flawless finish. For larger areas of the body, a tanning mitt is advised, applying the self-tan in light, even layers with circular motions.

Maintaining a tan while on holiday presents unique challenges due to factors like chlorine, sand, and increased sweating. Bennemann emphasizes that continued hydration is essential. Moisturizing daily helps preserve the tan, and rinsing off chlorine or salt water after swimming, followed by gentle patting dry, is recommended. Applying SPF is also crucial; protecting the skin from UV damage supports its health and allows the tan to fade more evenly. For frequent swimmers or those spending significant time in the sun, gradual tanning products can be useful for topping up color throughout a holiday.

For facial tanning, Davies notes that product preference varies. Mousse formulas should be non-comedogenic to avoid pore-clogging and breakouts. Alternatively, using products specifically designed for the face is recommended, as they often contain ingredients gentle enough for delicate skin. Mist products can offer a lightweight, buildable coverage that feels natural and may improve the overall appearance of the skin.
