Expert Reveals Simple Towel Drying Hacks to Prevent Musty Smells
A luxury homeware expert offers practical advice on how to properly air out bath towels to avoid lingering odors.
A persistent musty smell on bath towels can be a common household annoyance, but experts say a few simple adjustments to drying habits can effectively eliminate and prevent these odors. The smell is typically caused by bacteria or mold thriving on trapped moisture, dead skin cells, and body oils.
Jo Perks, from homeware brand Hampton & Astley, explains that the key to preventing smelly towels lies in ensuring adequate airflow. Bunching towels on hooks, folding them over, or leaving them on the floor hinders proper drying and creates an environment where bacteria can flourish.
"You should never leave towels bunched up, folded or on the floor," Perks stated. "Using a hook keeps the middle of the towel bunched together, trapping moisture and preventing it from drying."
Instead of hooks, Perks recommends using a heated towel rail whenever possible to speed up the drying process. If a heated rail is not available, she suggests running the bathroom's extractor fan or opening a window to reduce humidity. Warm, damp air is an ideal breeding ground for the odor-causing microbes.
Perks also advises that damp towels do not necessarily need to remain in the bathroom. Hanging them in a dry, well-ventilated area can significantly improve drying time.
Before storing towels, whether they are freshly used or freshly washed, they should be given a good shake to loosen the fibers and promote even drying. Ensuring towels are completely dry before being put away is crucial, as even slightly damp towels can contribute to a musty smell in cupboards.
For towels that have already developed a musty odor, Perks notes that the smell will likely persist if the drying issue is not addressed. "A towel that already smells musty, will stay musty. You will need to wash it," she said, implying that washing alone may not be sufficient without proper drying techniques.
