The list, compiled by analyzing flight search data, aims to showcase rising island retreats that combine natural beauty, cultural experiences, and affordability.
Culebra, Puerto Rico, was recognized as the best island for "water adventures," securing the seventh position overall. This destination is noted for offering a vibrant aquatic experience for American travelers who prefer to stay within the United States.
Sanibel Island, Florida, earned the eighth spot on the list and was lauded as the finest destination for "family escapes." The island offers a more accessible option for families looking for a vacation within the U.S.
Top Global Destinations
The annual report, which analyzes social media buzz, lodging options, and Google search trends, placed St. Lucia in the Caribbean at the No. 1 position, highlighting it as the best oasis for "romantic escapes." The island saw a 125% year-over-year increase in travel interest.
Portugal's Porto Santo, Madeira, claimed the second spot, recognized as the top destination for "wellness & relaxation." Known as the "Golden Island," it experienced an 85% surge in interest and is described as a tranquil alternative to more crowded European beaches.
Praslin Island in the Seychelles rounded out the top three, designated as the best place for "nature lovers." Other notable destinations on the list include Syros, Greece, for cuisine and charm; the Lofoten Islands, Norway, for Arctic adventures; Palawan, Philippines, for natural wonders; Phu Quoc, Vietnam, for affordable luxury; and Fiji for multi-generational value.
Expedia also provided honorable mentions for Cape Verde, identified as an "ultimate soccer-inspired" hub ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, praised as the best "private island for cruises."
Melanie Fish, Vice President of Public Relations at Expedia Group Brands, stated that islands offer not only an escape but also significant vacation value. The inclusion of destinations that generated notable buzz from cruise travelers and soccer fans led to the creation of these special mentions.
