Expanded Recall of Frozen Berries Due to E. coli Contamination

A recall initially issued in July for frozen berries has been expanded to include additional lots due to potential E. coli contamination. Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., the company responsible, announced that new batches of its frozen berries may be contaminated with a dangerous strain of E. coli.

The initial recall focused on the company's organic blueberries and berry blends sold at Publix stores in eight states. The expanded recall now affects frozen berry products sold under the Great Value brand at Walmart and Trader Joe's.

Walmart shoppers should check for Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend (10 OZ) and Great Value Organic Blueberries (10 OZ). These products were distributed to select Walmart stores across 30 states and Puerto Rico. Specific lot codes and "Best If Used By" dates for the recalled Walmart products are available through the FDA.

Trader Joe's customers should look for Trader Joe’s Organic Mixed Berry Blend (12 OZ). This product was distributed to Trader Joe's stores in 26 states and the District of Columbia. The recalled Trader Joe's product has a "Best Before Date" of February 20, 2028, and lot code 6 051 01.

Consumers are urged to check their freezers for these products, as they may have been purchased months ago and could still be present. The FDA advises consumers not to eat the recalled berries and to either discard them or return them to the respective retailers for a full refund.

Symptoms of E. coli infection typically include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting, usually starting three to four days after exposure. While most healthy individuals recover within a week, certain populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, are at a higher risk of developing severe complications, such as kidney problems, that may require hospitalization.

The Chilean supplier, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., is cooperating with regulatory agencies and is available to answer consumer questions at 336-899-5612.
