Execution Witness Recounts Chaotic Attempt on Christa Pike's Life

A reporter who witnessed the lethal injection attempt of Christa Pike, an inmate at Tennessee's Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, described the unsettling delays and confusion that indicated the procedure was going awry. Pike, 50, was set to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries.

Will Puckett, one of seven media witnesses present, told The US Sun that the prolonged wait for the execution curtain to open signaled that "something's going wrong." He noted that it should not take nearly an hour for the process to begin after the witnesses were seated.

Pike's attorneys reported that she was in critical condition at a hospital following the botched execution. According to her attorney, Randy Spivey, Pike was strapped to the execution table for approximately an hour while medical staff attempted to administer at least seven needles. One needle reportedly bent upon removal from her arm.

Puckett described the experience as "surreal" and stated he was left "at a loss for words" by the events.
