Caroline Sunshine, a former aide to Donald Trump, publicly criticized Scott Jennings, who is reportedly a leading candidate for White House press secretary in a potential future Trump administration. Sunshine stated on CNN that Jennings should not be involved in a Trump presidency, asserting he would "ruin" it.
The exchange occurred during a discussion on CNN’s “NewsNight” regarding the war in Iran. Sunshine, who served as Trump’s 2024 campaign communications director, and Jennings debated the U.S. involvement and its conclusion.
Sunshine argued that presidential success in the Middle East is measured by minimizing presence, not the duration of involvement. She specifically contrasted the legacies of George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, the latter of whom Jennings advised. "Which is why I don’t want you going anywhere near Donald Trump’s presidency to go ruin it with more of your Iraq 2005 talking points," Sunshine told Jennings, referencing his work on George W. Bush’s campaigns and his time as a special assistant in the White House.
The disagreement intensified after Jennings suggested that the U.S. would need to "leave some assets in the region for monitoring" even after a declared end to the conflict. Sunshine pressed Jennings on whether they could return home if the war was won, to which Jennings responded, "I don’t know you, and I don’t answer to you."
Bakari Sellers, also a panelist, reacted to the exchange with laughter.
