Morris Katz, a former campaign strategist for ex-Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, has admitted that the candidate's controversial Reddit posts, a Nazi tattoo, and initial reports of troubling behavior should have disqualified him from running.
In an interview with The New York Times, Katz stated that the criticisms leveled against Platner's campaign were valid. "I think there are things here, many of the critiques that have been made, that are incredibly valid and things to learn from," Katz said.
Platner withdrew from the Senate race in July, following an allegation of rape by Jenny Racicot, a former partner. This accusation was first reported by Politico.
Katz reflected on the various controversies, stating, "In hindsight, knowing what we know now, the Reddit posts alone probably should have been enough — or should have been enough. The tattoo should have been enough. The initial New York Times story on troubling behavior should have been enough."
His remarks drew criticism on social media, with some users recalling that they had previously voiced concerns about Platner and were dismissed by his allies. One post on X read, "What a bunch of arrogant gaslighters," adding that many had "literally screaming this from the rooftops and were met with all kinds of name-calling."
The New York Times had previously reported on Platner's flippant remarks about a tattoo in January, in which he jokingly asked a fellow candidate if he had one. Later, in June, the newspaper published a story detailing accounts from several women who had dated Platner, citing unsettling behavior. However, one accuser, Lyndsey Fifield, stated that the newspaper mishandled her account.
CNN had uncovered Platner's Reddit posts in October 2025, which included descriptions of himself as a "communist," claims that "all" police were bastards, and assertions that many rural White Americans "actually are" racist and unintelligent. Katz had previously described these posts as an asset.
Additional scrutiny focused on other deleted posts, including one where Platner appeared to minimize concerns about sexual assault, suggesting individuals should "take some responsibility for themselves" and avoid excessive intoxication that could lead to compromising situations.
Katz expressed the importance of allowing room for personal growth and change, stating, "I think that was something we needed, and I don’t want to lose that. I don’t want people’s lesson from this to be that there should never be room for grace." He conceded, "But I also think I was wrong."
Katz confirmed that a vetting document for Platner had been created and that it identified a Reddit account. However, he stated it did not reveal the full extent of the problematic posts that emerged later in the campaign. Regarding Platner's comments on sexual assault, Katz acknowledged, "I think it should have been a red line."
Maine Democrats are expected to nominate Troy Jackson to replace Platner in the race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who is seeking her sixth term.
