A former soldier is accused of strangling his wife to death after developing paranoid beliefs that she intended to leave him, a court heard.
Michael Davies, 57, is charged with the murder of his wife, Tracey Davies, 48, at their home in Cefn Cribwr, South Wales. The couple had been married for approximately one year before her death.
Prosecutors allege that Davies became increasingly convinced his wife was planning to leave him after he returned to Wales. He had previously worked as a private security guard in Abu Dhabi but came back to the UK in the weeks before his wife's death due to mental health issues. His online search history included terms such as 'how to stop being jealous in a relationship' and 'how to fight paranoia'.
Mark Cotter KC, prosecuting, told Newport Crown Court that Davies strangled his wife on their bed before stabbing himself. Police were called to the residence after Tracey Davies was found deceased. Davies sustained self-inflicted stab wounds and is also alleged to have taken an overdose of painkillers following the incident.
Michael Davies left the Army in 2023 and had been working in Abu Dhabi before his return to Wales on April 11 of the previous year, a move linked to his mental health. He admits to manslaughter by diminished responsibility but denies the charge of murder.
Tracey Davies, formerly Tracey Young, was remembered by her family as a warm and humorous individual who was central to family life. In a tribute, her family described her as a devoted mother, cherished sister, and loyal friend whose presence lit up any room. They noted her unwavering support, fierce spirit, and boundless compassion, stating that her children were her greatest pride.
The trial is ongoing.
