Ex-Premier League Player Jermaine Pennant Hospitalized After Dog Attack

Former Premier League player Jermaine Pennant required more than 50 stitches after being mauled by a dog while walking his own pet. The 43-year-old former Liverpool midfielder was reportedly attacked by a German Shepherd when he stepped in to protect his American Akita, King, who had been approached by the other dog.

Pennant described the incident as "really scary," recounting that the German Shepherd attacked him after he intervened. "I was on the floor and it was on my leg for at least five seconds," he told The Sun. "I felt this huge pressure. Imagine the force of a dog bite."

Images of Pennant's injuries showed four bite wounds on his right shin, with one described as larger and potentially requiring surgery. Despite the severity, he ultimately received over 50 stitches at the hospital.

Pennant credited his dog, King, with intervening and fighting off the attacking dog, effectively saving him from a worse situation. He shared his gratitude on Instagram, calling King his "hero" and "man's best friend."

King sustained a minor nip on his leg but was otherwise unharmed. Pennant stated he does not intend to report the incident to the police.

Reports indicate a rise in out-of-control dog attacks, with 29,400 cases recorded last year, an increase of 83 percent from 2020. Pennant, who retired from football in 2018, made 231 Premier League appearances for clubs including Stoke, Liverpool, Birmingham City, Leeds United, Portsmouth, and Arsenal.
