Ex-NYPD Detective Charged in GWB Road Rage Killing Drove for Investment CEO

The former NYPD detective charged in a fatal road-rage shooting on the George Washington Bridge was driving a company vehicle belonging to the CEO of QVT Financial, a firm that manages over $2 billion in assets. Victor Romero, 62, a retired Brooklyn narcotics detective, faces manslaughter charges for allegedly shooting and killing Koran Irvine, a Con Edison worker and father of two, on Tuesday night.

Manhattan prosecutors stated that Romero had been tailgating Irvine before firing a single shot into Irvine's vehicle and then fleeing the scene without stopping or calling for help. Romero was arrested Wednesday and ordered held on $1 million bail.

Romero had been working private security jobs since leaving the NYPD in 2001. It is unclear how long he had been employed by QVT Financial CEO Dan Gold, who founded the firm in 2003. A representative for QVT Financial acknowledged awareness of the reports and stated the company is cooperating with authorities.

Koran Irvine, the victim, was remembered as a loving father. The incident occurred on the Jersey-bound lanes of the bridge during evening commute hours. Romero, who had previously served as a detective specializing in narcotics, was charged Thursday.
