Ex-Met Officer Convicted of Rape, Served in Unit Tied to Couzens
A former Metropolitan Police officer, Mark Tyrrell, has been found guilty of raping a woman and committing sexual assaults.
A former Metropolitan Police officer, Mark Tyrrell, 57, has been convicted of raping a woman, three counts of sexual assault, and perverting the course of justice. Tyrrell served in the same command as convicted rapists Wayne Couzens and David Carrick.
Jurors at Southwark Crown Court heard that Tyrrell had sexual intercourse with the woman, whose identity is protected by law, after she repeatedly refused consent. At one point, he asked her if she realized that what he had done was rape. He was acquitted of a further count of rape, four counts of assault by penetration, and eight counts of sexual assault.
Prosecutors stated that Tyrrell "simply chose to take what he wanted" when the woman resisted his advances. Concerns were initially raised when officers responding to her home for an unrelated matter found Tyrrell hiding beside her bed. In messages to the woman, Tyrrell apologized for "being a sex offender" and "for ruining your life by being in it."
Tyrrell, who resides in Meltham, West Yorkshire, admitted misconduct in a public office and a separate charge of perverting the course of justice for persuading the woman to lie to the police about his presence in her bedroom. During his testimony, Tyrrell claimed that their sexual encounters were always consensual and that no force was involved.
Ch Supt Sara Leach commented that such conduct is "abhorrent," especially when perpetrated by a serving officer who had gained the victim's trust. She added that the force was "appalled that someone like this was serving within our organisation and it is right he has been brought to justice."
Wayne Couzens, who kidnapped, raped, and murdered Sarah Everard in March 2021, is serving a whole-life sentence. David Carrick, a former armed officer, is serving 36 life sentences for offenses against more than a dozen women.
Tyrrell resigned from the Metropolitan Police in September 2023, following his arrest and suspension. He is scheduled to be sentenced on December 16 at the same court.
