Ex-LAPD Chief Bratton Warns Against Firing Police Chief McDonnell Ahead of Olympics

Former Los Angeles Police Department Chief Bill Bratton has cautioned political candidate Nithya Raman against fulfilling her campaign promise to dismiss current LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell. Bratton, a highly regarded authority on policing, warned that such a move before the 2030 term end for McDonnell could lead to a "mass exodus" from the department, particularly with the upcoming Olympic Games.

Bratton, who previously led police departments in Boston and New York, has been credited with significant reforms within the LAPD, including fostering better community relations and increasing diversity within the force. He noted that the department had already made strides in reform, even amidst national unrest in 2020.

Raman, a city council member, has faced scrutiny over her stance on the issue, with her potential flip-flopping on the matter reportedly highlighted during a recent mayoral debate. Bratton expressed concern that Raman might consider appointing George Gascón, a figure he described as a "criminal justice reform" advocate who lost his reelection bid for LA County district attorney by a significant margin, as McDonnell's replacement.

"If she were to bring him or somebody like him into the department, that complicates it even further," Bratton stated in an interview with The California Post. He emphasized the need for "stability" within the LAPD rather than political upheaval.

Bratton drew a parallel to New York City, where a socialist mayor opted to retain Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch despite pressure from some factions. He suggested that the Democratic Socialists of America, an organization Raman is associated with, might be seeking a symbolic action against law enforcement, even though the LAPD does not enforce immigration law.

Bratton's remarks underscore the importance of experienced leadership and stability within the LAPD, especially in the lead-up to a major international event like the Olympics. He urged voters and Raman to consider the potential consequences of a leadership change at this critical juncture.
