Former Labour MP Gwynoro Jones, 83, is on trial at Swansea Crown Court accused of sexually assaulting a woman on a train. The alleged incident occurred in July 2024 on a Great Western Railway service traveling from London to Swansea.
Jones, who represented Carmarthen from 1970 to 1974, denies the charge of sexual assault. The prosecution claims that Jones, a passenger in a first-class carriage, told the woman she was "very pretty" before allegedly touching her inappropriately. According to the prosecution, Jones asked the woman personal questions about her marital status and where she lived.
The court heard that as the woman walked backward through the carriage, Jones allegedly extended his hand into her path, causing her to walk into it, and then tapped her on the bottom with his bare hand. The prosecution stated that the interaction made the woman uncomfortable.
Jones's defense claims that any touching may have been accidental and that he did not have a sexual motive. He told police during an interview that while he had chatted with the complainant, he denied the offense and stated he had not been flirting. He admitted he may have touched her by accident but denies intentionally touching her buttocks.
The trial is ongoing at Swansea Crown Court.
