Former Republican strategist Rick Wilson has labeled the first-ever GOP midterm convention taking place in Dallas this week as a potential "trap" for Republican candidates, likening it to the ill-fated Fyre Festival.
In an appearance on MS NOW's "The Moment With Katy Tur," Wilson suggested that candidates attending the event feel an obligation to be there to gain favor with Donald Trump. However, he argued that this could put them at odds with the concerns of voters on the ground.
"Those Republican candidates are also, however, facing those hard realities on the ground where even in Texas people are angry at Trump about affordability and the price of gas and groceries," Wilson stated.
He predicted that the two-day convention will be primarily centered around Trump, who is scheduled to speak on both days. Wilson warned that candidates who do not align with Trump's messaging might face negative consequences. "And if the people are not reciting the same mantra he does, they’re going to get crossways with him," Wilson said. "And if they do go out there and try to run on what he says at this convention, people are going to laugh him off the stage, I think."
Wilson believes that the "razzle dazzle" of the convention will not alter the current political climate shaped by issues such as rising costs. "All the things that have put Trump in this political climate that he’s in right now are not going to change by two days of the razzle dazzle, the wamma jamma that they’re going to try to do at this convention," he added.
