Former Republican Representative Barbara Comstock has expressed skepticism about her party's prospects in the upcoming midterm elections, attributing potential losses to former President Donald Trump's influence and prevailing economic headwinds.
During a panel discussion on MS NOW’s “The Weekend,” Comstock indicated that key election campaigning should occur in the summer, noting that the party is already in late September. She stated that Trump's actions over the summer, including his stance on the Iran war, increased gas prices, and rising interest rates, have been detrimental to Republican chances.
Comstock referenced an anecdote from a Republican operative who, when discussing a pollster's optimistic forecast for the midterms, reportedly remarked, "We’re trying to make the patient comfortable." She suggested that Trump's planned rally in Alabama, a state considered a Republican stronghold, falls into this category of attempting to soothe rather than address underlying issues.
"I think we’re trying to make the patient comfortable by sending Donald Trump to Alabama," Comstock said. She also noted that specific Republican candidates are already trailing in polls, citing the example of Mike Collins in Georgia, who is reportedly double digits behind incumbent Democrat Jon Ossoff.
Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross, also on the panel, offered a sharp retort, stating, "America’s already on life support, so I don’t know how comfortable these patients can get."
