A Kern County ex-convict has been convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting an innocent woman during an altercation over a stolen motorcycle. Luis Villachana, 51, faces life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder, burglary, and attempted murder.

The incident occurred on August 29, 2024, when Villachana's motorcycle was stolen from his residence. Instead of reporting the theft to authorities, Villachana, a convicted felon, reportedly recruited others to help him locate the stolen vehicle. His search led him to a home in Oildale, where he found the motorcycle in the garage.

Prosecutors stated that Villachana entered the house and assaulted a roommate when he did not receive information about who had taken the motorcycle. Subsequently, another roommate contacted their parents. The father of this roommate arrived at the scene and attempted to de-escalate the situation. However, Villachana allegedly fired shots, striking the man's feet. As the man fled, Villachana reportedly fired again, hitting him and then turning his weapon on Ruth Ann Cummings, 44, who was arriving at the residence in her SUV to assist her husband.

Cummings was struck by gunfire and later died from her injuries. "Villachana's actions were avoidable and entirely unjustified," said Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer. During the confrontation, Villachana reportedly stated, "I'm gonna smoke all you guys," before opening fire.

Villachana was apprehended in Shafter approximately one week after the shooting. His sentencing is scheduled for August 14, where he faces a potential sentence of up to 50 years to life in prison, plus an additional 24 years and 4 months.
