Ex-Boxing Champion Billy Joe Saunders Sentenced for Bar Brawl Involving Beer Bottles

Former boxing world champion Billy Joe Saunders has been sentenced to 15 months in jail, suspended for 18 months, after using beer bottles as weapons during a mass brawl at a baby shower. Saunders, 37, was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay a £1,000 fine and £1,000 in costs.

The incident occurred on November 27, 2021, at Poppy's Club in Bulkington, Warwickshire, where nine men became involved in a "very violent" altercation. One man was reportedly stabbed through the hand with a flick knife, and another was alleged to have been seen with a gun. The court heard that Saunders used a bottle to assault people on three occasions.

During sentencing, Judge Thomas Rochford acknowledged Saunders' past as an Olympian and professional boxer, noting that he was involved at a "more serious level" than some others due to his use of a bottle. However, the judge also took into account that Saunders did not initiate the confrontation but became involved later.

Saunders' defense lawyer, Sebastian Gardiner, explained that the boxer's life had been in turmoil in the months leading up to the brawl. He had suffered his first career loss to Canelo Alvarez in May 2021, sustaining a broken eye socket that led to his retirement. This defeat, coupled with the pressure of high expectations, caused Saunders to gain weight and begin drinking for the first time in his adult life.

"He had put on a huge amount of weight between May and November as he was drinking a lot and had come off the rails," Gardiner told the court. "He was devastated to see himself behave like that."

Saunders has since lost four stone, given up alcohol, and is back in training with the aim of returning to professional boxing. The court received character references from various individuals and boxing clubs.

Audie Knowles, 38, who hosted the baby shower, was jailed for 15 months, suspended for 18 months, for repeatedly using a bottle during the brawl. Other defendants, including John-Leon Porter, 27, and David Draper, 40, also received suspended sentences and community service for their roles in the violence. Porter received 33 weeks, suspended for 18 months, while Draper was given 12 months, suspended for 18 months. Martin Fury, 37, received a nine-month sentence, suspended for 18 months, for his "slight" involvement.

All five defendants pleaded guilty to violent disorder. Saunders had previously been convicted of illegally using dogs to hunt and kill hares, but that offense occurred after the baby shower brawl and was not considered during sentencing for the public disorder charge.
