Ex-"American Idol" Pastor Convicted of Murdering Wife for Mistress

Caleb Flynn, a former pastor and contestant on "American Idol," has been convicted of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, in their Tipp City home. A jury in Miami County determined Tuesday that Flynn fatally shot his wife, 37, in their bed on Feb. 16 while she slept, staging the scene to resemble a home invasion. The jury deliberated for 2.5 hours before reaching its verdict on all counts.

Prosecutors argued that Flynn, 40, orchestrated the killing to pursue a relationship with a much younger mistress, Alleigha Botner, 24. Flynn met Botner in 2022 when she was a 20-year-old intern at the church where he served as a music pastor. The couple had been involved in an affair for several years.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence including over 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and Botner. In court, Botner read messages in which Flynn expressed his desire for his wife's death and discussed how to commit the murder. Text messages sent hours before the killing included Flynn stating, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”

Flynn reportedly used a 9mm pistol in the murder, but the weapon was never recovered. His own 9mm pistol was found to be missing from his truck, where he normally kept it. The prosecution contended that Flynn staged the break-in to deflect suspicion.

Flynn, who appeared on "American Idol" in 2013, had publicly expressed his love for his wife, a teacher and volleyball coach, during his time on the show. His defense team argued that while the state proved Flynn was an adulterous husband, it did not present sufficient evidence to convict him of murder, citing a lack of forensic evidence, eyewitnesses, or the murder weapon.

Flynn faces a potential sentence of life in prison. He was convicted on charges including aggravated murder.
