Evangeline Lilly Ditched Hollywood for Faith and Health
The 'Ant-Man' actress revealed her struggles with fame and chronic health issues as reasons for leaving the industry.
Evangeline Lilly, known for her roles in "Lost" and Marvel's "Ant-Man" franchise, has stepped away from Hollywood, citing a long-standing discomfort with fame, persistent health problems, and a desire for a life guided by her Christian faith. Lilly stated in an interview with CBN News that she has "always hated being famous" and viewed it as a consequence of an acting career rather than a goal.
Despite the professional influence, financial rewards, and personal affirmation that came with her success, Lilly admitted to experiencing fear when consciously choosing to relinquish these aspects of her life. "There has been definitely moments of fear of like, ‘How do you consciously and intentionally let go of so much seemingly power and influence and potentially money and also just affirmation of yourself,’" she said.
Film critic Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto noted that such decisions are rare for established actors, especially those who achieve stardom in major franchises. "It’s extremely uncommon for stars to walk away from their acting careers," Toto told Fox News Digital. "Many work very hard to achieve a level of fame, so giving that up doesn’t always make sense. For some, like Lilly, they learn that an actor’s life has too many drawbacks, and they seek something more fulfilling."
Lilly explained that her faith played a crucial role in her transition, leading her to believe that God had a purpose for her beyond acting. "It’s just been incredibly liberating and beautiful to step into a total trust and surrender that God has a plan for my life," she said. "That plan doesn’t necessarily need to – it doesn’t have to be about fame and money and wealth and power. It can be about more important things and that all of it works together."
Toto also commented on the intense public scrutiny faced by celebrities, exacerbated by social media. "There’s a cost to Hollywood fame," he said. "You live under the microscope. Strangers assume they know you and sometimes treat you that way in public. Your career is subjected to scrutiny in ways others can’t imagine. It’s always been so, but the rise of social media makes all of the above worse."
The actress also revealed a significant improvement in her physical and emotional well-being after departing from the demands of her career. "My health has dramatically improved. I had massive chronic health issues by the time I retired," Lilly stated.
Lilly clarified that she considered herself retired since 2020, although her departure gained wider attention after a social media post in 2024. In June 2024, she announced her intention to step away from Hollywood, referencing a 2006 video where she expressed a desire to retire, focus on family, and engage in humanitarian work.
Toto suggested that the challenges faced by older actresses in Hollywood might also contribute to such decisions. "Another factor? Hollywood can be cruel to women past the age of 40. Men are allowed to age naturally and can still land major roles, even in action films. It’s not as easy for actresses," he said.
