U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich has described the 16 months he spent detained in Russia, detailing the moment he realized he had been "lured into a trap" when masked individuals surrounded him at a restaurant in March 2023. In his first UK broadcast interview, the Wall Street Journal correspondent recounted his arrest and subsequent 16-year sentence on espionage charges, from which he was released in 2024 as part of a high-profile prisoner exchange.
Gershkovich and his employer have consistently denied the espionage charges. Following his arrest, then-U.S. President Joe Biden stated that securing Gershkovich's release was a top priority for his administration.
