EU Imposes Broad Sanctions on Russian Arms Industry and Officials

The European Union has enacted its largest single package of sanctions to date, targeting almost 1,600 Russian individuals and companies connected to the nation's arms industry. The sanctions, announced Monday, specifically focus on entities suspected of manufacturing parts for drones and missiles.

These measures are part of the EU's ongoing response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began nearly five years ago. In addition to the arms industry, the EU also sanctioned 77 individuals accused of organizing or overseeing "sham elections" held in occupied regions of Ukraine.

Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, stated that over half of the newly sanctioned entities are involved in the production chain for ballistic missiles, which she noted are used daily to harm Ukrainian civilians. The sanctions aim to disrupt Russia's military capabilities and hold accountable those involved in actions deemed illegal by the EU.
