EU Finalizes New Free Trade Deal with Philippines

The European Union and the Philippines have announced a new free trade agreement, marking the latest in a series of bilateral deals pursued by Brussels as it seeks to expand its economic partnerships and reduce reliance on traditional trading partners. The deal, struck Tuesday, is designed to increase the approximately 30 billion euros ($35 billion) in annual trade between the 27-nation EU and the Philippines, a nation of 115 million people.

EU's chief trade negotiator Maroš Šefčovič stated the agreement will foster more resilient and diversified supply chains, a strategic priority for the bloc. Trade between the EU and the Philippines is currently dominated by electronics, with the EU exporting goods such as aircraft, pork, and pharmaceuticals, and importing semiconductors, integrated circuits, and industrial machinery from the Philippines.

The Philippines is the third member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to sign a bilateral trade deal with the EU, following Vietnam and Singapore. Negotiations are also underway with Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, with the long-term goal of a broader EU-ASEAN free trade agreement.

Šefčovič highlighted the deal's significance in reinforcing the EU's engagement with the Indo-Pacific region. The EU has been actively seeking new trade links across the globe, from Australia to Argentina, as it navigates geopolitical challenges, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and heightened tensions with other global powers.

This strategic approach aligns with the "middle powers" concept discussed at the World Economic Forum, emphasizing enhanced partnerships in a changing global landscape. The EU aims to forge new alliances and strengthen existing ones to ensure stability and growth.
