Ethiopian Conjoined Twins Successfully Separated in St. Louis

In a remarkable medical achievement, conjoined twins Hiyab and Wuhbto, who were joined at the crown of their heads, have been successfully separated. The intricate procedure, which lasted approximately 24 hours, was performed at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, following an extensive 300-hour planning phase by the hospital's medical staff.

The twins, who traveled from Ethiopia for the surgery, were aided by Ronald McDonald House Charities and Ethiopian Airlines. This type of separation surgery for craniopagus twins—those joined at the head—is considered one of the most complex and rare pediatric procedures undertaken in the United States.

Dr. Andrew J. White, the hospital’s chief medical officer, highlighted the crucial role of collaboration and expertise in the success of the operation. "Partnership, collaboration and expertise were the building blocks of this incredible feat," White stated, emphasizing that the surgery demanded "sublime precision" and meticulous coordination across multiple medical specialties.

Following the separation, Wuhbto has undergone a cranioplasty operation to repair and reconstruct a defect in her skull. Hiyab is scheduled to undergo the same procedure later this fall. The twins are currently participating in individualized therapy programs tailored to their specific needs, supported by a rehabilitation team of 60 clinical members and partner organizations.
