Ethically Challenged Candidates Face Voters on Election Day

As voters head to the polls, they are faced with a slate of candidates embroiled in various controversies, ranging from accusations of abuse and adultery to criminal indictments. The November 3rd election presents a dilemma for many, requiring them to weigh political priorities against the ethical standing of those on the ballot.

Among those facing scrutiny is Ohio Rep. Max Miller. He is accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, including allegations of shoving her and dumping hot water on her. Further concerns have been raised about his 2-year-old daughter's broken collarbone, which Miller denies responsibility for. These accusations surfaced during a contentious custody battle. Miller previously faced abuse accusations from former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham and had a DUI arrest in college. His district, which previously favored Donald Trump, is now considered a toss-up.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is running for the Senate amidst a string of scandals, including accusations of infidelity, a securities fraud indictment, and allegations of giving preferential treatment to a donor. Paxton was impeached by the Texas state House in 2023 but narrowly avoided conviction in the state Senate. He now faces a surprisingly competitive race against Texas state Rep. James Talarico in a traditionally Republican state.

Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota is reportedly under federal investigation for allegedly misrepresenting her age on paperwork to obtain U.S. citizenship and for potentially marrying her brother. Omar has denied these accusations, asserting she is a victim of government weaponization due to her political stances. A previous investigation into her immigration status by the Trump administration was closed by a Biden-appointed U.S. Attorney in Minnesota.

Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey faces charges of assaulting, impeding, and interfering with law enforcement officers. The charges stem from an incident at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility where she allegedly attempted to block authorities from arresting Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. McIver has pleaded not guilty and claims to be a victim of government overreach.

Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas was indicted on bribery, money laundering, and conspiracy charges for allegedly accepting $600,000 from the Azerbaijani government and a bank in exchange for influencing his subcommittee positions. He was pardoned by President Trump last December, though Trump later expressed regret that Cuellar did not switch parties.

House candidate Bobby Pulido has been criticized for sexually suggestive social media posts and for his past association with a former bandmate convicted of sexual assault. Pulido has attributed his posts to jokes lost in translation.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez of California is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for alleged inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer.

Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly paying a former intern for a no-show job. Additionally, controversy has surrounded his son-in-law's posting of Nazi imagery on social media, a former digital director's antisemitic tirade, and campaign staffers' ties to a former Ku Klux Klan leader.

Former Rep. Mary Peltola is facing scrutiny over allegations that her team attempted to recruit a candidate named Dan J. Sullivan, nicknamed “Decoy Dan,” to confuse voters in the Alaska Senate race due to his name being similar to incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. Both federal and state investigations are underway.

North Carolina congressional hopeful LaKesha Womack was served with a felony summons for failure to pay a car rental fee from 2019.

Several incumbent lawmakers have recently departed due to scandals. Former Rep. Eric Swalwell resigned amid rape accusations, which he denied. Former Rep. Tony Gonzales stepped down following revelations of sexual relations with staffers, one of whom died by self-immolation. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned amid accusations of defrauding COVID-19 relief funds for her campaign. Outgoing Rep. Cory Mills faced allegations of stolen valor, financial misconduct, and domestic abuse, all of which he denied. Rep. Chuck Williams dropped his reelection bid following accusations of inappropriate conduct with staffers. Maine oyster farmer Graham Platner withdrew from his Senate bid after facing rape accusations.
