Away CEO Jennifer Rubio recently celebrated her birthday with an elaborate party in the Hamptons, drawing a notable guest list and the unexpected presence of her estranged husband, billionaire tech entrepreneur Stewart Butterfield. The pair announced their separation on August 5, concluding six years of marriage.
Despite their recent split, Butterfield was in attendance at the Hamptons celebration, described as an over-the-top event with a lineup of high-profile guests. The party featured musical performances by Nelly and Ashanti, who reportedly sang for over an hour, followed by an impromptu set from rapper Styles P. Among the attendees were prominent figures such as Lauren Santo Domingo, Tory Burch, Derek Blasberg, CAA founder Michael Ovitz, Barbara Bush, Huma Abedin, and W magazine editor-in-chief Sara Moonves.
Rubio, who co-founded the luggage brand Away in 2015, declared she has entered "a new era" and celebrated "in the most Leo way possible." The separation, announced via Instagram, came as a surprise to some, given recent public appearances the couple had made together. They were seen attending the Dior show at LACMA and the Venice Biennale, acquired a new pet in May, and hosted friends on their boat over the summer. The couple also attended the Met Gala in May, following a $23 million pledge to the institution for undergraduate and graduate internships.
However, sources close to the couple indicated that the separation had been in the works privately for some time. "Jen and Stewart have privately been moving down this path for some time," a source familiar with the situation told Page Six. "They remain good friends and have hosted multiple trips with friends in that capacity this summer." Rubio and Butterfield share two children, and in their joint statement, they emphasized their commitment to co-parenting. "Though we will no longer be married, we are still a family and what matters most to us remains the same," the statement read. "Our children will always come first, and we are committed to raising them in a loving environment with two active and present parents."
