A woman is struggling to reconcile her relationship with her mother after learning her mother has begun dating her abusive ex-husband. The 26-year-old, who has been estranged from her father since she was 12, expressed her disapproval of the new relationship.

Her father's abuse was emotional, psychological, and physical, leading the daughter to sever ties for her own well-being. When her mother revealed she had reconnected with him and they were dating again, the daughter found the news infuriating.

Despite her vocal opposition, her mother believes the daughter is overreacting and insists the relationship should not affect her, promising she would not have to encounter her father. The daughter, however, feels hurt and invalidated, telling her mother that she felt resentful.

This conversation led to her mother crying and hanging up the phone, subsequently turning off her phone. The daughter stated she did not intend to hurt her mother's feelings but felt compelled to express her truth. She fears losing her relationship with her mother but finds it difficult to engage with her, even on mundane topics, due to the lingering trauma and the knowledge of her mother's relationship with the man who intentionally caused her harm.

In her advice column, Dear Abby, also known as Jeanne Phillips, addressed the situation. Abby questioned whether the father had also abused the mother and acknowledged that while it is a mother's duty to protect her child, the daughter is now an adult capable of self-protection. Abby noted that the daughter cannot prevent her mother from seeking happiness, regardless of whether it's perceived as a mistake. The reunion may not be permanent, and the daughter may face the consequence of seeing her mother less. Abby suggested that the daughter might benefit from therapy to emotionally separate from both parents and heal from the past abuse.

Abby also addressed a separate query from a woman who dislikes her husband's friends, an introverted woman who finds a couple her extroverted husband enjoys socializing with to be loud, argumentative, and prone to excessive drinking. The husband is unhappy that his wife refuses to socialize with them, though he is willing to see them alone. The woman feels triggered by their behavior. Abby advised the woman that she does not have to be available whenever the couple wishes to socialize and can choose to see them less often than her husband does.
