Esteban Ocon Denies Physical Altercation with Haas Team Principal
Formula 1 driver Esteban Ocon has refuted allegations of physical violence following his unexpected exclusion from the Mexican Grand Prix, attributing the incident to a "difference in viewpoints."
Formula One driver Esteban Ocon has denied reports of a physical clash with Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu, stating that while a discussion did occur, allegations of physical violence are untrue.
Ocon was unexpectedly removed from the Mexican Grand Prix lineup and replaced by reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa. The Frenchman, who was already slated to depart the team at the end of the season, reportedly engaged in a dispute over tire strategy with race engineer Laura Mueller during Friday's practice session. L'Equipe claimed this escalated into a row with Komatsu that may have involved a physical altercation.
In a statement posted on X, Ocon addressed the reports: "Last night, a difference in viewpoints led to a discussion with the parties involved. Whilst I acknowledge that this took place, I categorically reject any reports or allegations suggesting that any form of physical violence was used to resolve any differences of any nature. I strongly condemn violence in all its forms and firmly believe that disagreements should always be handled with professionalism, respect, and mutual understanding. I kindly ask that speculation be avoided while the matter is being addressed."
It remains uncertain if Ocon will compete for Haas in any of the remaining five races of the current season. The decision to bench Ocon for at least the Mexican Grand Prix weekend followed his argument with race engineer Mueller regarding a change in the planned tire strategy. Mueller instructed Ocon to use medium compound tires instead of the planned softs, to which Ocon responded, "No, no. I want to do soft... don't do that to me, come on."
The driver is currently assessing his future in Formula One, with reports indicating that Formula 2 championship leader and Ferrari junior Rafael Camara is expected to replace him at Haas next season.
Sky Sports' Ted Kravitz elaborated on the situation, noting Ocon's uncertain future and his competition for a potential seat with Valtteri Bottas at Cadillac, although Cadillac has reportedly stated Ocon is not in contention for that drive. Kravitz mentioned that Ocon's argument with Komatsu led to the team's decision to bench him, and that the matter may have legal implications, with Komatsu unable to comment further.
