Escaped Prisoner Rammed Police Vehicles After Four-Month Manhunt
Jay Bennett, who escaped prison in December, was apprehended in Coventry after a confrontation involving firearms officers and his Volkswagen Golf.
An escaped prisoner was apprehended by armed police in a gym parking lot after a pursuit in Coventry, ending a four-month manhunt. Jay Bennett, 33, used his black Volkswagen Golf to ram police vehicles outside the Fitness Factory gym on March 24.
Bennett had escaped from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire in December, having served seven months of a nine-year sentence. Following his escape, authorities initiated a search for the wanted man. He was located at the gym, leading to the confrontation with armed officers.
Bodycam footage captured the incident, showing officers surrounding Bennett's car. During the encounter, officers appeared to fire at the vehicle's tires in an attempt to prevent his escape. Despite orders to stop, Bennett revved the engine, swerving and colliding with parked cars. A police vehicle then forced his Volkswagen into a wall, boxing him in. Bennett was subsequently removed from the car and arrested by multiple firearms officers.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. Bennett faced 18 charges, admitting to absconding from prison, three counts of driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, three counts of criminal damage, and two counts of attempting to escape from custody.
On September 28, Bennett was sentenced to three and a half years in prison at Warwick Crown Court.
