Ernie Johnson, a familiar face on TNT Sports for decades, has announced that the 2026-27 season will mark his final year hosting the acclaimed studio show "Inside the NBA." This decision, he stated, is entirely his own and stems from a desire to slow down and focus on his family.

Johnson, 70, revealed that he has been managing heart issues over the past two years, including undergoing bypass surgery 14 months ago. While he emphasized that his health does not necessitate his departure and that he feels "great," the experience has prompted him to re-evaluate his priorities. "Going through that has made me treasure even more every second with my amazing wife of 44 years Cheryl and being Poppi to our five grandchildren," Johnson said in a video shared on X.

He clarified that he is not retiring entirely but rather "cutting back." Johnson intends to remain involved with TNT and CBS, continuing his work with March Madness and other projects. He has also launched a production company named 32 Bowties, which will focus on uplifting stories within the sports world.

Johnson, who has hosted "Inside the NBA" for 37 seasons alongside Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal, described his decision as a "turning of the page" rather than an ending. He expressed gratitude for the years spent with his co-hosts and the production teams, as well as the leadership at TNT and ESPN for their support.

His tenure has included numerous memorable moments, including hosting the trophy ceremony for the New York Knicks' championship win in June 2026, where he interviewed Finals MVP Jalen Brunson. Johnson noted that the demanding preparation required for the show, once a source of joy, had become more of a challenge, further influencing his decision to step back from the nightly broadcast.
