Longtime host Ernie Johnson announced Wednesday that he will be retiring from TNT's "Inside the NBA" following the current season. His departure after 37 years with the program, which began in 1990, will create a significant void.
Charles Barkley, a prominent figure on the panel, has stated that he will retire from the show alongside Johnson, calling their futures a "package deal." Barkley had previously announced that the 2024-25 season would be his last, but the continued presence of Johnson on the broadcast was a factor in his decision to remain. He indicated that he stayed on for an additional two years to ensure the crew could maintain their jobs before the network's NBA rights expired.
"Me and Ernie are a package deal," Barkley told The Bill Simmons Podcast. "So right now, unless Ernie changes his mind, next year is my last year, 100 percent."
Barkley became emotional during Wednesday night's broadcast, thanking Johnson for his leadership and acknowledging the difficulty of the day, despite knowing it was coming. He also expressed his respect and admiration for Johnson.
"It’s been an honor to work with Ernie, Kenny and Shaq," Barkley said in a recent podcast appearance. "We’ve got the best crew in the business. We’re all waiting on Ernie to make a decision — he’s the godfather. I’ll have nothing but love and admiration and respect for that guy."
The future of "Inside the NBA" beyond this season remains uncertain. The show is currently scheduled to continue airing through the playoffs.
