Erika Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, has shared her reflections on grief in the year following her husband's assassination. In a guest essay published by The New York Times, she detailed navigating the profound loss and her commitment to continuing her husband's work.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025, while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. Erika Kirk, who took over leadership of Turning Point USA after his death, stated her intention to write about her experiences to connect with others on a common human level, believing that shared human experiences like grief transcend political divides.
"You do not have to share someone’s politics, faith or worldview to understand what it means to lose someone you love," a Turning Point USA source told Fox News Digital. "She wanted to meet people on common human ground and speak honestly about what the past year has been like."
Kirk described the intense difficulty of experiencing holidays and personal milestones without her husband. She drew on advice from second lady Usha Vance, focusing on getting through immediate periods, such as "the next 15 minutes," as a strategy for managing overwhelming sadness. She noted that as time has passed, her focus has shifted from mere survival to actively living, honoring what she believes Charlie Kirk would have wanted.
"Grief is strange. Time continues even when every part of you wants it to pause or, better yet, rewind. But the people we love who have passed on would not want us to spend the rest of our lives trying to rewind," Kirk wrote in the Times. "At first, I needed to survive the next 15 minutes. Over time, I’ve realized that Charlie would want me to live them."
Erika Kirk emphasized that her husband actively sought out conversations with those who held differing views. She recalled his belief that "When people stop talking, really bad stuff starts." In the wake of his death, she is committed to upholding this principle, advocating against further political polarization and retreat into ideological enclaves.
Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 to promote conservative principles on college campuses across the United States. He was 31 years old at the time of his death and is survived by Erika and their two children.
