Erika Kirk Details Husband Charlie Kirk's Final Moments and Addresses Public Scrutiny

Erika Kirk has offered a detailed account of her late husband Charlie Kirk's appearance after his assassination and addressed the public scrutiny she faced in the aftermath.

Charlie Kirk, 31, was killed on September 10, 2025, during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University. He was shot sniper-style from a rooftop by Tyler Robinson, who has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and other charges. Erika Kirk was in Arizona at the time and learned of the shooting while accompanying her mother to a doctor's appointment. She recounted her rush to secure a private flight to Utah, but Charlie had already passed away before she arrived at the hospital.

Kirk described being advised by a police officer not to see her husband's body, but she insisted, stating, "With all due respect, I want to see what they did to my husband. I didn't get a kiss goodbye this morning. I just want to kiss my husband." She recalled hospital staff attempting to prepare his body for viewing, removing tubes and attempting to clean blood. Kirk said she observed a look on his face that confirmed her belief he "saw Jesus" and "fought the good fight," describing his half-open green eyes and upwardly curled lips as a "smirk" that was "not sad."

She also addressed criticism regarding her attire and public demeanor following the assassination. Kirk faced online scrutiny and conspiracy theories, particularly for wearing a gold sequined pantsuit to Turning Point USA's AmericaFest convention in December 2025. She stated that she wore the "sparkly suit onstage" because it was "the only thing that fit." The day after Kirk's death, she sent a Turning Point staff member to purchase plain black clothing from an Alo Yoga store in Salt Lake City for her to wear on Air Force Two as Vice President JD Vance transported her husband's remains. Kirk explained that her only available clothing was a t-shirt from her brand, Proclaim, which she felt was not appropriate for the somber occasion.

Following Charlie Kirk's death, Erika Kirk was appointed CEO of Turning Point USA, the conservative youth organization he founded in 2012. She works from the couch in his former office, which she has maintained as a shrine to her late husband. Their two-year-old son, Mac, is reportedly the only other person to have sat in Charlie Kirk's chair.

The Kirk family has initiated legal proceedings, filing a wrongful death notice against Utah officials. They claim that Utah Valley University (UVU) made "reckless" decisions that led to Charlie Kirk's death, including failing to conduct a proper risk assessment, not scouting nearby rooftops, and lacking a written security plan or briefings. The notice names the State of Utah, UVU, its police department, police chief Jeffrey Long, former UVU president Astrid Tuminez, and other state actors.

UVU, in response, stated they are aware of the notice and address legal matters through established processes, with their focus remaining on supporting the campus community. An external review by UVU also found that Turning Point insisted on an outdoor venue despite campus security concerns and that the university failed to conduct a formal security assessment, properly evaluate potential threats like a rooftop shooter, or create an event action plan, deferring critical decisions to the organization.

Tyler Robinson remains awaiting trial for murder, facing the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.
