Erie Gunman Kills Eight, Including Pregnant Woman and Children, Before Standoff
Police describe the scene in Erie, Pennsylvania, as one of the most heartbreaking they have encountered.
A gunman killed eight people, including a pregnant woman and two children, in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening before barricading himself inside a home where a subsequent police standoff ended with his death. Authorities described the incident as one of the most devastating and heartbreaking scenes they have encountered.
The shootings occurred in the 700 block of Perry Street. Residents called 911 after hearing gunshots and witnessing a man firing a handgun outside a residence. Upon arrival, police discovered two deceased women on the street, one of whom was pregnant.
Standoff and Investigation
The suspected shooter retreated into a nearby home, leading to a standoff with Erie Police Department officers and SWAT team members. Despite repeated demands to surrender, there was no response. Loud noises, initially feared to be more gunfire, were later identified by authorities as flash bangs used by police before they entered the home with a search warrant.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah stated that he had not witnessed anything comparable in his 28 years of law enforcement and that the city had likely never seen such devastation. Mayor Daria Devlin characterized the events as a terrible tragedy and assured residents that the situation was contained.
Victims and Ongoing Investigation
As of Saturday afternoon, the identities and ages of the eight victims had not been released, nor had any details regarding their relationship to the gunman or to each other. It remains unclear what events preceded the shooting.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences and pledged support to Erie. Authorities were scheduled to hold a press conference at 4 p.m. local time on Saturday to provide further updates on the shooting and the timeline of events.
