Eric Dane Detailed Extensive Drug Use in Posthumous Memoir

Eric Dane, the late actor known for his roles in "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria," detailed an extensive period of drug experimentation in his 20s in his posthumous memoir, "My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments."

An excerpt of the book, obtained by People, reveals that Dane described this time as a "dark period" where his focus was primarily on drug use, even when he was cast in roles. "I call that my dark period. I auditioned for a few roles, got cast in some, but mainly I did drugs," Dane wrote. He further elaborated on the extent of his use, stating, "I got high, I got stoned, I got wasted, I shot up, I freebased, I did every drug imaginable."

The memoir lists a staggering array of substances Dane tried, including alcohol, marijuana, LSD, heroin, cocaine, mushrooms, mescaline, crystal meth, crack, and various painkillers. He specifically mentioned taking "fistfuls of painkillers" and "buckets of painkillers," naming Vicodin, Percocet, and OxyContin. Dane also noted his use of benzodiazepines like Xanax and Valium, as well as muscle relaxants and stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin.

"I don't think there's a drug I didn't try," he stated in the memoir.

Elsewhere in the book, Dane recounted a terrifying incident where his youngest daughter, Georgia, saved him from drowning during a family vacation in Antigua, shortly after his diagnosis with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2025. He noted that his ability to swim was compromised following the diagnosis.

Dane passed away on February 19 at the age of 53, less than a year after announcing his ALS diagnosis. His death certificate listed respiratory failure as the cause of death, with ALS identified as an underlying progressive nervous system disease. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

"My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments" is scheduled for release on November 3.
